Mark Fergusson Testifies in Support of HB174 on behalf of HOFA

Mark Fergusson, Chief Organic Officer (CEO/CFO) of Down Earth and President of the Hawaii Organic Farmers Association (HOFA) was back at the Legislative offices last week testifying in support of HB174 HD1. We are happy to report that it passed the next round of hearings, albeit with amendments, and is on its way to the Finance Committee as of February 15, 2013.

HB174 HD2 imposes labeling requirements and import restrictions on imported genetically engineered produce. Authorizes labeling of non-genetically engineered food and creates a private right of action to enjoin violations. Effective July 1, 2112. (HB174 HD2)

The committees on Consumer Protection Committee (CPC) recommend that the measure be PASSED, WITH AMENDMENTS. The votes were as follows: 8 Ayes: Representative(s) McKelvey, Kawakami, Brower, Carroll, Evans, C. Lee, Thielen; Ayes with reservations: Representative(s) McDermott; 4 Noes: Representative(s) Cabanilla, Cachola, Ito, Tsuji; and 3 Excused: Representative(s) Belatti, Har, Yamane.
